Athlete Profile:  Devang Topiwala

1. In general, what is your background?

I grew up in a small town named Forrest City in the State of Arkansas where I graduated High School. I started my college career at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and later transferred to University of South Carolina-Columbia majoring in Electrical Engineering. Right after graduating in December 2001, I started working at a Nuclear Plant in Lake Wylie, SC. The Plant work wasn’t my cup of tea so I got a new job at SPAWAR in Norfolk, VA. While working full-time, I completed my MBA at Old Dominion University-Norfolk in 2006. I got married in Nov 2009. Growing up playing tennis, I consider myself a team athlete and a competitive individual.

2. Age, Occupation?

Just turned 30 last weekend! I am an Engineer at the Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center, Atlantic located in North Charleston, SC.

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

Learned about CF through a bunch of friends at different occasions last year. They had nothing but excellent references to CFI and mentioned that it would improve my tennis game. Since the reference was made towards improving my tennis game, I immediately came in one Saturday and abruptly bumped into “Cindy”. The following next few days were challenging and quite comical…since then, I kinda got addicted to CF.

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

CF now reflects the way I do day-to-day activities/planning. CF is mentioned at most every conversation I have with friends/family/co-workers. My energy levels have improved tremendously both at work/home and on the courts. I am moving on the courts faster and stronger than ever. CF has increased my confidence level in general.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

A goal would I would like to accomplish is to consistently do double-unders. I would also like a cool nickname like Dragon or Warrior.

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

My favorite CFI moment so far was during a 20 rep back-squat session. My mind was totally mush after about 14 reps, and my brother Pritesh (Pete) yelled at me to focus and breathe and I somehow got through the reps.

7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

The coaches and the union. It’s truly amazing to see the CFI coaching help the athletes move better. The feedback also provides for a positive CF experience.

8. Favorite WOD?

Fight Gone Bad due to the variety

9. Least favorite WOD?

The one with a whole bunch of burpees (100 I think)

10. Favorite movement?

Snatch

11. Least favorite movement?

Over-head squats are my nemesis.

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

Basil, Poe’s, and at home (Wife’s cooking). For happy hour I go to Madra Rua.
