Athlete Profile: Andrea Carey
1. In general, what is your background?
- I was born in New Jersey and moved to southern Delaware right before I started 1st Grade. For college I decided to try a different route and went to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Long Island where I played both basketball and softball. I moved around a lot as a kid and I always told myself that when I grew up I was going to live in the same house forever. Well I still travel at least 6 months out of the year, and I don’t really think I have grown up, but I do call Virginia Beach home. That’s where my house is so I guess technically it’s home.
2. Age, Occupation?
- 25, Marine Engineer
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
- A friend of mine that I played softball with in college started crossfit back in 2008. Through facebook I saw pictures of her basically transform herself into a complete badass. When I found out I was moving to Va Beach I got in contact with her and asked if she thought it would be something that was good for me. After college I didn’t really do much of anything and I got pretty lazy. I started noticing the weight I was putting on and figured moving to Va Beach would be a good chance to start fresh. And I went home to visit my parents and went for a run with my mom. Not only did she run further than me, but she also ran faster, and I just wasn’t having that anymore. It just so happened that around the same time I moved my friend was opening a new crossfit box where she would be a trainer. That was back in October of 2009, and like they say, the rest is history.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
- I view things completely differently now. I used to work out so that I could eat whatever I wanted, and that obviously wasn’t working for me. Considering I went to a federal service academy, I am in the greatest shape of my life now and not back then.
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
- I would love to be able to deadlift 300#…and get a muscle-up
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
- I was pretty excited when I got my first pull-up…and finishing Murph in under an hour
7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?
- The fact that even though I’m only in town for a couple of months everyone has been extremely welcoming and friendly. The people really do make the box and everyone at Integrity is top notch.
8. Favorite WOD?
- “Annie”…or anything with Double Unders
9. Least favorite WOD?
- “Arnie”..quite possibly the worst 34+ mins I’ve ever had during a workout..that guy must have been amazing..I highly recommend everyone try that one out
Isn’t it funny how I say “Arnie” is my least favorite but yet I am pushing for everyone to try it. Only in Crossfit would that happen.
10. Favorite movement?
-Double Unders
11. Least favorite movement?
- Ring dips
12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?
- Amen Street Seafood and Basil…but my restaurant knowledge is very limited here.
