Athlete Profile: Api Firoozi

1. In general, what is your background?

I was born in Iran and grew up in the burbs of Hotlanta. I graduated from UGA in 2005, and was all over the map for a few years. I decided I needed health insurance, so I got a real job and settled here in Chucktown in August of 2009.

2. Age, Occupation?

26 and holding, English teacher

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

Zack and Anna Caldwell introduced me to CrossFit. Zack showed me a YouTube video of some very attractive people making some very hard exercises look very easy. I thought to myself, “Self, this might be for me.” The first time I came to Integrity I couldn’t believe it was a gym…I was pretty sure it was a ploy and that my organs were going to be sold on the black market.. Matt took me through my first WOD….done… I also believe that this program will increase my chances of survival with  the looming apocolypse…

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

CrossFit has changed my life in various ways. My friends and family no longer want to talk to me because I rattle on about CrossFit, my students and co- workers think I am secretly a victim of  abuse because I’m always bruised and limping, my dirty clothes hamper smells like a bag of smashed buttholes, and   I’m plagued with guilt every time I eat a meal I did not prepare at home. And I love it. Growing up I played a few sports,  but was too brown and round to achieve much success- my enthusiasm far outweighed my skill. Through the years I played soccer ,ran, and “worked out” at a globo gym. I attempted to integrate a strength program but never had the knowledge or guidance for results.  Because of CrossFit I have never felt stronger, sexier, and more badass.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

Pullups. They are my nemesis. A beast that I have yet to tame… but you watch your back pullups..I’m coming for you – and hell’s coming with me..

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Anytime I get through the door I’m happy!

7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

Our CrossFit community is incredible. The coaches are patient, knowledgable, and encouraging. I always leave CrossFit feeling better than when I came in. Everyone is excellent to each other and there are no judgements. It’s an equal- opportunity ass kicking.

8. Favorite WOD?

Any WOD I can RX, which does not happen as often as needed…

9. Least favorite WOD?

The ones that I finish and know that I could have gone harder…

10. Favorite movement?

Power cleans

11. Least favorite movement?

Any variation of the snatch – too easy to overthink them..

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

I’ve never met a meal I didnt like…
