Athlete Profile: Himan Darji
1. In general, what is your background?
I am from Chicago originally. I moved to South Carolina 10 years ago to attend the University of South Carolina. I graduated in 2003 and ended up moving to Charleston.
2. Age, Occupation?
30, Engineer and owner of a small federal contracting firm.
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
I always tried to get into a routine at the gym with friends, but it never worked out. Two weeks before my 30th birthday, I decided I really needed to turn things around health wise. I looked into P90x and even tried it a couple of times but without anyone else pushing me, I’d quit after 5 minutes. After talking to a few people I work with and some researching online, I decided to give CrossFit a try. Ten minutes of “Cindy” kicked my ass and I quickly realized how out of shape I was. I signed up as soon as I could walk again.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
What a difference CrossFit has made in a short amount of time. I went to being in the worst shape of my life to probably the best. It’s when I started to see my appearance change that made me want to push myself more each day. Even though some days are overwhelming, I still look forward to the next workout. I feel physically and mentally stronger. There has been many times where I didn’t think I would be able to finish the WOD but pushed through it. I pay more attention to my diet (although it still needs a lot of work). There is not a day that I don’t talk about CrossFit or think about a CrossFit WOD. So much that I’ve even influenced 7 of my friends to join. Now if we could just set up a referral program!
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
Definitely improving my diet.
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
My first time RXing a WOD.
7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?
The coaches, competition, and environment. We have an open, welcoming and inclusive environment that allows people of all backgrounds and levels to be successful. There’s nothing like having 10 of your friends and coaches screaming for you and cheering you on to finish a WOD. This happens at every workout at CFI… especially the 7 P.M. class!
8. Favorite WOD?
Haha, I don’t know if I have one. I guess it would have to be Fran. Intense and completely drains you in a short amount of time.
9. Least favorite WOD?
Murph
10. Favorite movement?
Deadlifts
11. Least favorite movement?
Turkish Get-Ups
12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?
Basil
