Athlete Profile:  Evaline Delson

1. In general, what is your background?

I was born and raised here in Charleston.  When I was ten, my family moved to Holland (My mom is from there) for three years.  That is when I fell in love with soccer.  When we moved back, I was forced to play on guy’s teams since there weren’t any competitive girl’s leagues in Charleston (this was the eighties).  I was the first person at my high school to get a soccer scholarship to college.  I continued playing until I blew my knee out in grad school.  I’m a happily married mother of two amazing girls – Nathalie (9) and Sydney (6).

2. Age, Occupation?

40, Chiropractor

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

I’ve always been active.  A couple years back my sister’s friend, Chris Miller, told me about this amazing workout and how I was perfect for it.  It was in Mt Pleasant and I couldn’t fit it into my schedule.  My stepfather passed away in December 2007 and then my brother passed away in August 2008.  I was in a mental and physical funk.  I was going to Globo Gym, going through the motions.  I wasn’t eating, but I gained 20 pounds.  On my 40th birthday, I looked into the mirror and didn’t see myself.  I called Chris Miller and asked her for more information on “that workout.”  Luckily, I located the gym on Belgrade which just opened up a couple weeks prior; I went by, talked to Coach Nigel, told him I’d be back the next day and have been going ever since.

4.  How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

Crossfit helped me turn an important corner in my life.  I will always be grateful that I found “IT”.  You don’t just go through the motions like you would at a Globo Gym.  I’ve never worked out so hard, so continuously, for so long.  I feel like I’m fit, mind, body, soul.  I can never see myself working out any other way now.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

Rxing a ring dip WOD

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

November 22, 2009.  In the middle of a five round WOD, looking up from my SDHP and seeing my husband, Norm, working out next to me.

7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

It’s not just the people and camaraderie, it’s the feeling of working out hard with people that seem to share the same passion as I do.  My past workout partners didn’t have the same intensity.  It’s rare to leave Integrity and not feel pushed to my limit.  I love the care that goes into the WODs – the coaches and athletes go hard and honest.

8.  Favorite WOD?

FGB which was my very first named WOD.  Finally broke 300 recently!

9.  Least favorite WOD?

Any WOD with running and/or pull-ups

10. Favorite movement?

Any kind of Clean

11. Least favorite movement?

Pull-ups.  Only because I can Rx pull-ups but I don’t.  Long story

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

LE Juice on Daniel Street in Avondale (down the street from Gene’s Hoffbrau).  Categorically, the healthiest place to eat in Charleston, only a mile from Crossfit Integrity

    Ev,

Your sister told me you were Crossfittin’. Good for you!!!

I’m about to take my L1 cert to CENTCOM for a year…

No fun being away from family at all, but it’s what you have to do some times. The Navy has been really good to us.

All my best, and keep up the good work.
