Athlete Spotlight – Carrie McCall

1.  In general, what is your background?

I grew up in a small town outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. I was the fat kid who attempted to get out of gym class every chance that I could.  After graduating high school, I ended up moving to Lexington, KY for college. After college, I moved to Louisville, KY to work with The Salvation Army.  During this time, I reached my heaviest weight but also realized that I had do something about it.

2.  Age, Occupation?

31, Pastor

3.  How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

When I started my weight loss journey, I started really simple… counting calories and walking 3 times a week. I eventually joined a gym and started working with a trainer. One of the trainers I worked with started doing CrossFit. I always found that I enjoyed his “CrossFit- style” sessions more challenging but more rewarding.  After working really hard to lose 90 lbs, I gained 30 lbs back while I was in seminary.  After graduating seminary and moving to Charleston, I decided that CrossFit wouldn’t only be a great workout but an opportunity to meet people.

4.  How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

CrossFit has changed the way I look at discomfort and fear. I would easily give into my anxiety and convince myself that I couldn’t do something. I’m constantly being challenged to step out of my comfort zone and learning that it’s okay to feel discomfort.  It is also helping me see that being fit is more than a number on the scale.

5.  Name one (or more) fitness goal(s) and/or personal record(s) you would like to accomplish?

Getting a pull-up is on the top of my goal list. All I want is for my chin to get over that bar without assistance. Someday I’m hoping to also figure out how to do double unders.

6.  Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Finishing my first Open! I still can’t believe that I let the 6 am class convince me to actually sign up to do the Open but I’m so glad I did.

7.  What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

I love the community atmosphere.  I’ve lived in many different places over the last several years and this is the quickest that I have felt at home in a city. I love that if I don’t show up to a class I will get a text to asking why I wasn’t in class.

8. Favorite movement?

Snatch

9.  Favorite WOD?

The first WOD I remember RX’ing. It was a simple WOD with running, KB swings, and situps.

10. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

Sesame

CrossFit Integrity, Charleston, SC
