Athlete Profile: Hunt Summerford
I was born and raised here in Charleston and went to middle school and high school at First Baptist on Meeting Street downtown. I played football and baseball every year from little league till my senior year of high school. My main passion growing up however was surfing and I pretty much lived at the beach whenever I wasn’t at school. I went to college at The University of South Carolina and majored in Hospitality Management. I was the night manager at The Double Tree downtown on Church Street for a little over a year and quickly realized that was a way too stressful of a lifestyle for me. I am now a supplier for commercial heating and A/C equipment. I have been doing that for the past three years. My main passion now is stand up paddle boarding (mainly distance paddling) and last year I finished one of the biggest physical accomplishments in my life: a 168 mile paddle board trip from Columbia to Charleston.
2. Age, Occupation?
I am 27 and in sales for Faulkner/Haynes & Assoc. We are manufacturer’s rep for commercial heating and A/C equipment.
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
About two years ago a friend/co-worker started talking to me about CrossFit. He goes to Carolina CrossFit in Columbia and talks about it non-stop. He told me it will get you in the best shape of your life and you probably wouldn’t step foot in another “GloboGym” once you started CrossFit. I had been working out pretty hard for about four years and wasn’t seeing the results I wanted for the amount of time I was putting in. I needed a change and I really love to push myself so I thought I would give it a try. Haven’t looked back since.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
I was working out pretty regularly before I joined CrossFit (about 4-5 days a week) and was not getting anywhere. I was constantly hitting plateaus and staying there without any gains in strength, etc. After I joined CFI I was seeing consistent gains in strength and speed in the first month. As far as level of fitness goes, I have never felt better! It has completely changed the way I approach working out and fitness in general. It is amazing to look back at where I was a year ago and I never would have thought I would be able to make such a change in a year. I definitely eat a whole lot better than I used to before I started here. It has really opened my eyes to what I am putting into my body.
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
I would like to back squat 2x my body weight.
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
It was probably during the first CrossFit Open WOD “WOD 12.1” this year (7 min. AMRAP of burpees). I had the top number when I was done with 114 burpees. It only lasted for about half a day till I was smoked by some of the “veterans”, but it felt good while it lasted.
7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?
There are some great people here and the atmosphere is awesome! I remember the very first WOD I did. We were doing push press EMOTM, and I was using way too much weight. I had to drop weight half way through and before I could turn around or say anything there were two people helping me change the weight out. I thought that was pretty cool.
