Athlete Profile: Melissa Webb
1. In general, what is your background?
I grew up in a small town outside of Savannah, Ga. I have two older brothers so I spent my childhood in painful wrestling moves like The Rack and the Figure Four. I played every sport growing up through high school and I eventually received a scholarship at a Junior College for softball. I have lived in Charleston for a year and a half and I’m married to Stephen who is a firefighter with the CFD. We have a wild, rowdy, three year-old named Cooper and we live on Johns Island.
2. Age, Occupation?
29, Assistant Manager, lululemon athletica
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
Two years ago I started working for lululemon athletica in Atlanta. I went with my team to CrossFit Atlanta and did all my intro classes. I popped in and out mixing in all other kinds of workouts including yoga, pilates, cardio, and barre classes before moving to Charleston. I became a jack of all trades; master of none! After flirting with CrossFit for way too long I got committed once JoMo and BK persuaded me to sign up for the Open in February. While I’m far from being a master of CrossFit I feel that I’m off the mediocre playing field I was on before CrossFit.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
CrossFit is changing my life all the time. I’m still figuring out my diet. What I’m recognizing is that I need to eat more and plan out my meals more! My level of fitness is no longer mediocre and I love that my yoga practice has gotten stronger just as my yoga practice helps me in CrossFit. (do more yoga people!!) If I need to put Cooper on my shoulders or pick up something that’s heavy I can because I do CrossFit.
More than that what I love most about CrossFit is that I continue to surprise myself every time I walk in. I get to do things (or die trying) that I never thought would be possible. Everyday I get a slice of humble pie and a confidence boost (that moment just after a WOD). Just as in my yoga practice what happens ON the mat translates to how you show up OFF the mat in your life. CrossFit is the same way. CrossFit has made me a more confident person and has helped me to be less afraid to fail. I could care less if I’m the last person to finish the workout. We are all fighting our own battles (in and out of the box) every time we show up and we all go to war together. I love when people ask me what kind of workout I do and I get to educate them on CrossFit. Many girls think that CrossFit is not for them because they can’t lift weights so speaking to that is kinda fun. If I can do it so can you!
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
I would love to Rx “Helen” (The last time I got 1 round Rx
Really to Rx any workout with pullups would be awesome!
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
My favorite moment so far was The Open and the fact I got to submit some kind of score every week. I loved the added competition of it, the energy during the workouts and cheering everyone else on!
7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?
I appreciate the coaches and how they coach. It can’t be easy to hold the attention of 30-40 people, coach the movements, ensure that everyone is being safe and doing the movements properly. They each bring something different but all are very knowledgeable. I ask a ton of questions so the fact that they are always willing to answer them is great. Also, I love our members! You guys are amazing, inspiring people from all walks of life so I love the diversity.
8. Favorite WOD?
Not in the moment…but I really liked the Charleston 9 workout. Being a firefighters wife it really resonated with me that our public safety and soldiers give up so much everyday when they go to work. I hope I never have to experience what those families go through everyday.
9. Least favorite WOD?
I don’t really have one that I dislike because in every workout I get exposed somewhere so it all evens out right?!
10. Favorite movement?
In general body weight movements but I my favorite are HSPU (even better when I can Rx them)
11. Least favorite movement?
I’m working on liking deadlifts but they are not my favorite right now…living in possibility that one day we will be friends
12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?
I don’t eat out a lot for dinner but my favs for lunch are Burger Babies, Taziki’s, Caviar and Bananas, Black Bean Co., Dellz Deli and Yo Burrito.
