1. In general, what is your background?
I grew up in Rock Hill, SC with my parents and two sisters. They are my inspiration. I definitely have middle-child syndrome and am always looking for my shining moment. That’s probably why I’m so competitive. I live by the motto, “Work Hard. Play Harder.” I went Furman in Greenville and studied abroad in China and Chile. It sparked my love for traveling. I’ve been to some great places including Tibet, Cambodia, Argentina and some US cities along the East and West coasts. Growing up, I vacationed in Charleston and knew I wanted to move here once I graduated college. I’ve always had an active lifestyle. I’ve been playing soccer since freshman year of high school, played women’s club at Furman and now play a few leagues in Charleston. I still have a gym membership and haven’t been to the franchise gym since joining CrossFit Integrity in December 2009.
2. Age, Occupation?
I’m 27 years old and am a Sales Rep for CreateSpace. I provide consulting services to help authors publish their manuscripts.
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
I learned about CrossFit from Khoung. I was very hesitant to start after Khoung came home his first day and laid on the floor for about an hour. But, he went the next day and kept going. Also, he showed me the workouts, and I was intimidated by the olympic-style weightlifting. He finally convinced me to go. I started CrossFit because I was bored at my local gym and by the cardio classes. When I went to the gym, my standard 1-2 hour workout consisted of running for 30-45 minutes and circuit training or doing a class. I needed something challenging, regimented, and that was scalable. CrossFit offers total body conditioning at a high level of intensity.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
I’m in the best shape of my life. I’ve seen much improvement in my upper-body strength and overall fitness. I have a new standard for what “working out” means. If I am not sweating like a mad woman, feel like I was beat up, or ran a 10k, I need to do more. CrossFit and the coaches showed me that working out can be fun and engaging.
I did the Paleo Challenge, and it definitely helped me improve my performance and recognize that I’m the proverbial, “I am what I eat,” which is not good. I’m a foodie and have realized that I can enjoy eating and drinking, but it should be done in moderation. Each WOD is a new challenge every day, and I keep coming back for more.
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
I’d love to do a muscle up.
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
I have two proud moments. The first time, I Rx’d a WOD with pullups. Then, I amazed myself and deadlifted 335 lbs in March.
7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?
The coaches and camaraderie at CrossFit Integrity is like no other. The coaches focus on each individual and stress the importance of proper form and fundamentals. I haven’t been to another CrossFit location, but have been to many gyms. Our facility is a family and has great positive energy.
