Athlete Profile: Chrissy Fleming

1.  In general, what is your background?

I am from a small town in the Upstate of South Carolina, Walhalla, SC.  It’s the first exit from I85 into South Carolina from Georgia. I am an only child so I was, and still am, very close to my parents. My daddy was the baseball coach at my high school so I spent countless hours helping him work on his field. One would suspect that I was a softball player since my dad was a baseball coach but FORTUNATLY I figured out that softball was NOT my sport. I played 3rd base in 12 and under when a girl when to run home, I rolled the ball (on the ground) to the catcher to get the girl out. On the way home from the game, my dad strongly suggested that I pick a sport and focus on it. At that point, I had been playing tennis for a few years and decided that this was going to be my focus! During the fall, I got a different coach and started playing USTA tournaments the following summer and throughout the year. My senior year, I signed to play tennis at Erksine College in Due West, South Carolina. This is a small division AA, Christian Liberal Arts School (Oxymoron) near Anderson, SC.  I played tennis all 4 years of college and finished my career with 2 conference championships. I also met my wonderful husband my freshman year at Erskine!!! After undergrad, I came to Charleston to get my MS at The Citadel in Health, Exercise, and Sport Science, and the rest is history.

2. Age, Occupation?

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

My daddy has always been a very fit guy and about 6 years ago started getting the CrossFit online journal. The more he read and started doing the WOD’s, the more he started pressuring me to find a box. I was really into running when I finished college and had misconception that I would be good at this. I ran my 3rd half marathon with Rick (my time got WORSE with each race) in Savannah and we complained the whole race. On the way home we decided it was time for a change. I was going to give Rick the Intro class for Christmas and after I attended the Saturday morning class decided I wanted to join in too!

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

First of all, I am so much stronger than I was when I was playing tennis and I love this! It has changed the way I look at fitness by changing my perception of what I am able to do physically.  I gain confidence knowing I was able to make it through a particular WOD, and this helps in giving me the push that I need to get through tough situations. From CrossFit, I have also learned to stop comparing myself to other people and look at the progress that I alone have made, and I think this lesson translates into life as well! My daily schedule also revolves around when I can work out with my Wonderful husband!! 🙂

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.

10 consecutive pullups… who knew I’d string together my first two pullups pregnant?

6. Favorite CrossFit movement so far?

I love cleans and double unders!!!

7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

The encouragement that you get at this place is awesome!! Where else can you be surrounded by this many positive and encouraging people that are all working to better themselves in some way! This environment is amazing!

8. Favorite WOD?

3RFT, 20 KB swings, 30 abmats, 400m run

9.  Least favorite WOD?

Fran- I’m pretty sure I had a melt down and cried behind the box when that was over…

10. Favorite movement?

Cleans, double unders, and kettelbell swings

11.  Least favorite movement?

Wallballs and snatch balance

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

I’m paying – Mustard Seed, someone else is paying – Old Village Post House

    Chrissy! You are such a huge part of what makes CFI so awesome. Your enthusiasm and drive to be a better athlete is so refreshing! Thank you for all your energy and all that you add to the CFI community! Can’t wait to see you wod-ing at 9 months pregnant!!!!!

    Best. Judge. Ever!!!! Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of having you count or judge for them during a WOD knows exactly what I’m talking about :-). Chrissy, your positivity and effervescence are contagious!! You make me smile just by walking into the gym. You constantly work hard and always seek to improve. In short, you are simply amazing!! Love working out with you and Rick, and can’t wait to meet the next CFI baby!

    Chrissy!!! Love your positive energy and enthusiasm!!! My favorite quote from you recently was, “stop comparing yourself to others, and start comparing your own accomplishment!” (or something along that line!) But that is so true! Keep up the awesome work!!!

    CHRSSY!!! You were weak as kitten with me in the intro class over a year ago and it’s been great getting to where we are today together. I love having a “go-to” partner that knows how to push me to do more in the most positive way with the best lines yelled in the best Walhallan accent. I also love pushing you to do the same! Having you as a counter, partner and paleo team member has lead to having you as a great friend outside of CFI and that is pretty awesome. 🙂 I look forward to seeing you do those 10 consecutive pull-ups in the near future (preggo power!). Also cannot wait to meet Baby Murph Fran Fleming this fall 😉 Keep up it!

    Great profile Chrissy! I really LOVE having you in the box. Your cheery demeanor and positive attitude light it up from the second you walk in! I hope you stay on that pullup bar till the doc says stop! You’ll get your 10 consecutive with a belly and show up the rest of us 🙂 I always think of you as the best judge in the CrossFit world!!! You helped me through my first competition and encouraged me to get my first C2B pullups, which led to 3! Thanks for always being an inspiration and a positive competitor and motivator!

    Cute, Uplifting, Purely positive!! And ditto on being the best judge in the gym! There is NEVER a doubt if one(athelete) got a good rep or a no rep! Thanks for keeping us all honest! Keep @ those pull ups!! We’ll get you to 10 before you know it!!
