Athlete Profile: Frank Bui

1. In general, what is your background?

I’m originally from Connecticut, but lived in Charleston for 20+ years.  I attended the College of Charleston and The Citadel for undergrad and grad school.  Growing up I didn’t play many organized sports, but realized I needed to stay in shape after college.  My first desk job after college added 20+ pounds on me, so I joined a regular commercial gym. Thus began my “globo” gym years.  Lots of bench and curls during this time [bro].

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

The awesome coach Vanny was always urging me to try CrossFit, and in December 2012 I took my first intro class.  Before CrossFit I was somewhat narrow minded about fitness, but after the first few wods I was humbled by the intensity of each workout.  I was hooked by the challenge and drive to perform better on each movement.  Thanks coach Vanny, you the best 🙂

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

The variety of CrossFit forces me to work on fitness areas I normally would neglect without programing and coaching i.e. cardio, core, mobility, squats.  Now I enjoy these areas and perform them on a weekly basis.  Also, CrossFit has introduced me to Olympic weightlifting and gymnastic movements which are challenging and fun.

I can say today that I am a lot stronger, have more endurance, and more flexible from when I first walk through the door.  Now I spend more time in the gym than at happy hours after work.

5. Name one goal you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

Body weight snatch

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Competing in Integrity’s Revenge with Matt Fuini (Team Mean M-Fers) and the Famously Hot Showdown with Brian Wilkie (Team Frank & Shakes)was a great experience.  Also, my first muscle up and first 300+ pound squat were “hella dope”.

7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

Being able to train with some of the best and most experienced coaches and athletes around! Everyone is very helpful and encouraging.  It’s great to see athletes from all different backgrounds and levels excited to reach their goals.   Also, the CFI training facility is one of the best and largest in the area (much room for “so many activities!”).  I particularly enjoy the FLEX-I-TORIUM™, an area within CFI dedicated to classical strength movements.

CrossFit Open workout 13.3 (150 wbs, 90 du, 30 mu)

10. Favorite movement?

I have 3:  pullups, pushups, and pullups.  I enjoy the strength and gymnastic movement (especially strict movements).

11. Least Favorite movement?

Wallballs <—-suck

12. Favorite restaurant in Charleston?

Sesame, White Duck Taco, Desanos, Chipotle, Quiznos (Daniel Island only)
