Athlete Profile: James Price

1. In general, what is your background?

I was born and raised in Greenville, SC and graduated from the University of South Carolina.  After college I attended the Charleston School of Law and I’ll be graduating from there in May.

2. Age, Occupation?

27, student at Charleston School of Law

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

My parents were the ones who told me about CrossFit.  They started doing it before I did.  I went home for spring break one year and decided to try it out.  I mean, how hard could it be?  I worked out regularly at globo gym and I thought I could handle a “little 20 minute workout.”

Well, as I’m sure you all can guess, it wasn’t exactly a “little 20 minute workout.”  To me it seemed like every athlete there, including my parents, was barely breaking a sweat while I was fighting like crazy just to stay conscious.  I was so sore after that WOD that I couldn’t move for two days.  At that point I realized I wasn’t in as great a shape as I originally thought.

Later, when I went home for the summer, I ended up joining a CrossFit gym.  I joined partly to get into better shape and partly to burn off stress from a breakup.  I quickly became hooked and loved the feeling I got from finishing a WOD.  When I moved back down to Charleston I joined CFI to stay in shape and to burn off stress from school.

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

How has it not changed it?  I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been before and I have more energy.  I used to be really scrawny but I’ve been able to add some muscle thanks to CrossFit.  My diet has also improved.  I’m eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and I haven’t eaten fast food in almost a year. So in short, I’m looking better, feeling better, and eating better.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

I’d like to master muscle-ups and/or complete a double-under ladder.

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Besides my first day? I’d have to go with the day we did Death by Pull-ups.  I had just recently joined CFI so I was having to scale most of the WODs, but pull-ups were one of the few movements that I did not have to scale.  I was the last person still doing pull-ups and everyone in the class was standing around cheering me on.  It was an amazing feeling knowing that I had the support of everyone around me.

7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

I’d have to start by saying the people.  Everyone is friendly and has a good attitude.  I love the friendly rivalry between athletes during a WOD.  It makes me push myself harder and the best part is that it always ends with smile, a handshake, and “good job.”

You have to love the coaches too.  They’re friendly and dedicated to helping you achieve your best.  If you’re having trouble with a movement they’re willing to work with you until you’re able to do it.  They’ll push you and make you realize that you can do something you previously thought you could not.

8. Favorite WOD?

Murph, Nicole, Angie. Basically anything that has pushups and pull-ups.  The WOD that we did on 10/20/10 where we had to lift a total of 10,000 lbs. was pretty fun too.

9. Least favorite WOD?

Anything with overhead squats and anything I can’t Rx.

10. Favorite movement?

Pull-ups, push-ups, rope climbs. Basically anything that’s just using your bodyweight.

11. Least favorite movement?

Overhead squats. I’m also starting to dislike kettlebell swings.  For some reason those have been draining me lately.

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

I rarely ever eat out but I’d probably have to say Five Loaves.  Of course I enjoy a burger from Poe’s Tavern every now and then too.

Kevin, thank you, that means a lot. You’re awesome as well. In fact, everyone at CFI is. I really and truly enjoy working out with everyone.

Amy, thank you. However I couldn’t have gotten this far without help from the coaches and other athletes. CFI is lucky to have coaches with a such a high level of commitment to helping athletes achieve their best.

Alissa, heck yea! I have to represent.
