Athlete Profile: Javier Ochoa
1. In general, what is your background?
I was born in Lima, Peru and came to the states with my parents when I was four years old. I lived in New York City for 10 years and at the age of fourteen I had to move back to Peru where I completed my high school years. Growing up in two different cultures was one of the most challenging but also one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. It’s nice to be bilingual but many people borrow me for so many things that it becomes exhausting to me. Towards the end of high school I ran into a relative of mine who was attending The Citadel and I became so interested that I decided to apply. I spent four long fought years there and graduated with a degree in Business. I loved every minute of it though some people think I’m insane for choosing that path. After graduation I lived in DC and New York for a couple years and worked for some companies that I thought I would enjoy. After realizing I wasn’t set out to be a businessman and missing where I went to college so much, I pursued what I’ve always wanted to do and moved back to Charleston. Since I was a little kid I’ve wanted to be a cop and I encourage people to follow what they loved when they were young because it can make them happy. So I finally understood that was the right path for me. Some people say it’s because I’ve watched too many action movies. They are probably right. I love my job and I’m really happy but I must admit some days do get stressful. I’ve always kept in shape all through high school, college, and even after but it was hard to keep a steady regimen so after many different gyms and trainers I decided to make CrossFit a part of my life and I’ve never felt better and more humbled. My message to all is “if it feels right it usually is and do what makes you happy because you’ll never look back!”
2. Age, Occupation?
29, Police Officer
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
I was looking for a new place to help me get in really good shape mainly for work. So I asked around and a friend at work who came to CrossFit a lot told me about it. Just the way he talked about how physically demanding it was and at the same time getting so tired of regular gyms really made me interested so it was a no-brainer for me.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
I think I find myself wanting new goals (not just fitness) and I also want to learn as much as I can about the science of CrossFit. I try to go at least three times a week. My strength has definitely changed a lot. I was always into cardio and calisthenics but never really trained with weights until now.
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
It’s so hard to do pullups so I want to do one perfect pullup wearing a forty pound vest. I have so many others but I think that is number one.
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
Great question. I think when I completed Murph (no 20lb vest yet, and using blue band). I was the last one to finish (I’m almost always the last to finish) but I didn’t care because I hung in there and completed it.
7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?
I like the name of our gym. It’s a great quality to have and I try to abide by that every day.
8. Favorite WOD?
Murph. Definitely Murph.
9. Least favorite WOD?
I can’t remember the name of it but it was 4 rounds of a 400m run, 10 front squats, and 10 back squats. I’ve never felt so sick before in my life and I loved it!
10. Favorite movement?
With weights probably the power clean. With body weight I love pushups but hopefully that will change when I get better at pullups.
11. Least favorite movement?
I have a couple. Burpees, toes-to-bar, and overhead squats. But I’ll suck it up every time.
12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?
Favorite social place: Reds
Favorite “really nice restaurant”: Halls Chophouse
Favorite Southern place: The Hominy Grill
