Athlete Profile: Michael Woods

1. In general, what is your background?

I’m from Oklahoma City, OK originally.  I attended The University of Oklahoma and graduated in 2004 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.  Following college I joined the United States Navy and received my commission in October of 2004.  Also, I am married to Amy Woods, one of the resident CrossFit Integrity badasses.

2. Age, Occupation?

28, Submarine Warfare Officer (I’m looking for a new job though so if anyone has an opening for an engineer then let me know)

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

I learned about CrossFit via word of mouth, specifically when I attended bootcamp classes at ESAC.  I started because I never really was very good at structuring a solid long-term workout plan and thought it would be a nice change of pace.

4.  How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

Prior to joing CrossFit, Amy and I were in to running quite a bit and completed a handful of races including a couple of half-marathons.  Turns out I’m not a big fan of running and it is convenient that CrossFit is much more fun and much more productive.  My level of fitness has gone through the roof and I feel really great about myself all of the time.  The only drawback is that due to this backsquat training regimen I’m getting a big round ass, which is a bit unsettling.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

Complete “Linda” Rx.

6.  Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Completing Fight Gone Bad slightly hung over and still making the board.  This was the first time I had done anything board-worthy so it felt good, but unfortunately the results got erased and I never made it up to the big boards…but I still remember!

7.  What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

Exercise-wise, I like gaining flexibility the most.  I think everyone who worked out with me when I first started can remember how I could only squat about 60 degrees.

My real favorite part is the people, of course.

8.  Favorite WOD?

“Michael”, only because it is my name.

9.  Least favorite WOD?

Anything done in the Summer when it is 100 degrees outside and 100 percent humidity.

10. Favorite movement?

Ring Dips

11.  Least favorite movement?

Pull-ups, mostly because I have a nagging pain in my elbow that I got from doing pull-ups so I can’t practice them and improve.

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

Glass Onion for dinner
Fat Hen for brunch
Triangle for happy hour

Would it be unprofessional if I refer to you as “Muffin Ass” at work?
