Athlete Profile: Nick Grothe
1. In general, what is your background?
I grew up in Madison, Mississippi (outside of Jackson). I played high school and club soccer growing up. After high school, I went to Southern Miss for 2 years and decided I needed a change of scenery, so I moved to Charleston and finished up school at CofC. Out of college my job moved me to Greenville, SC. I lived there for 2 1/2 years and was lucky enough to have a job that can be based anywhere in SC, so I decided to come back to Charleston a few months ago.
2. Age, Occupation?
26, Account Executive – Marriott Global Sales
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
Had some friends at the gym tell me about a few of the “Girl WODs”. Three of my friends and I met at the Globo Gym on a Saturday to do a WOD that we pieced together. I remember it had thrusters and burpees in it. Needless to say, it killed all of us and I quickly realized I was not as fit as I thought I was. After that, I did CrossFit type workouts by myself at the gym for about 9 months. Then I decided to check out the local CrossFit in Greenville. As soon as I stepped into CrossFit Reaction I was hooked. The daily competition is addictive.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
Growing up with two brothers everything is a competition. After high school I no longer had soccer to fill that need for competition. I got into running and doing races for a couple years, but running gets pretty boring to me. Since I found CrossFit, I can get my competitive fix ever day I go in, not to mention the numerous events/competitions that are always going on.
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
I would like to compete at Regionals. I would prefer to get there as an individual, but I realize that going as an affiliate team might be more realistic. I would also like to be a cool kid and be able to DU a scarf like Cullen.
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
Putting my name on the board. (OHS 235#)
7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?
The friends that I have made.
8. Favorite WOD?
Anything with an Olympic lift in it.
9. Least favorite WOD?
RJ – It was the first WOD I did at Intergrity and I had to scale it. After that day I knew I was coming to a legit CrossFit.
10. Favorite movement?
OHS or Cleans
11. Least favorite movement?
Double-Unders! I need to start working on them daily. Amy is supposed to keep me honest about working on them.
12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?
17 North in Mt. P

It’s time for DU intervention!!! Every time I see you, we’re gonna go work on those…get ready, yo!
Work as much as you like, the drunken scarf DU will never be equaled. It’s like the perpetual motion machine. Or Nigel kissing a girl.
