Athlete Profile:  Charlene Dejoseph

1. In general, what is your background?

I grew up in Wayne, PA, which is a suburb of Philadelphia. I’m the middle child out of five so I grew up competing and trying to beat my brothers and sister, which has made me super competitive. I started playing sports at a young age, but soccer is my number one love. I played soccer, softball, and ran track all through high school, but when I came to Charleston to attend CofC, I decided to play rugby. It’s a great sport and I played all four years at CofC (we went to Nationals twice! yay). I missed soccer after college, so now I play in a couple of rec leagues around town.

2. Age, Occupation?

28, server at The Thoroughbred Club in the Charleston Place Hotel (stop by and say hi!)

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

I heard about crossfit from a guy that I worked with. He started at Holy City CrossFit and said they had a two week free pass, so a couple of the girls from work and I decided to try it out. Before I went, I googled CrossFit and was a little skeptical at what I saw, but I thought, if the other girls are going, then I could do it too. This was around May 2010…and I loved it from the start. I hate going to a gym and running or using the elliptical and then going around to lift weights. I just get bored and I end up leaving before I finish my circuit of weight lifting. So, CrossFit has been a dream come true.

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

I don’t drink as much because doing a WOD hungover is NOT fun. I try to watch what I eat; I’ve been aiming to eat paleo three days a week (trying to do it all the time is just not gonna happen). I can tell it’s helped in soccer- I feel faster and more energized. CrossFit has helped me get over the fact I don’t need to look at a scale and I feel better about myself. Plus, I’m just way stronger then I used to be and I like it.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

I would like to be able to do double-unders!!!!! ARggh, I hate them so much. I can randomly get about five in a row, but usually it’s two or three. Also, pushups. I suck at them. I’m a stickler on my form and I will not do “man” pushups because I can’t keep that tight plank and I hate even “worming” a little. I don’t count worming as pushups. It’s all or nothing, baby!

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Hmmmm….. I was really happy when I was able to do kipping pullups (dead hangs are next!). There was a moment not too long ago where there was a WOD with OHS and running. I think it was like four rounds at 65#. I set up two bars just in case I wouldn’t be able to do the 65# all four rounds. I got through the first round and on the run I just told myself, you can do those again. It was hard, but you can do it. I got through the second round, and on the run I told myself, that sucked, but you did it. Just try it again on the third round and you can always go to the lighter bar. I made it through the third round and on the run I told myself, you only have one round left. You can do this. And I finished with an RX and it felt great.

7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

I love the before and after feeling of doing a WOD. I’m nervous and anxious before, but afterwards I’m so tired and don’t want to move, but it hurts so good. I love that feeling of completion. The cheering and people are pretty awesome too.

8. Favorite WOD?

I really like chipper WOD’s or ones that incorporate running.

9. Least favorite WOD?

I can’t really think of one….there are definitely movements I like less then others…see question 11

10. Favorite movement?

I like back squats and cleans. I feel really satisfied when I do cleans.

11. Least favorite movement?

DU’s because I whip myself a lot, pushups, OHS, rope climbs

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

I love Thai, so I’d have to say Basil. But Jasmine on JI is pretty good too. If I had a ton of money, I’d eat at the Charleston Grill a lot, it’s pretty darn delicious. Andddddd, Andolini’s pizza is the best hangover food ever.
