Athlete Profile: Alex Hoyt
1. In general, what is your background?
I grew up in southern Maine about an hour north of Boston. After high school I spent some time wandering around trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I ended up in Boston going to school at Community College there and working full-time at a restaurant downtown. Then sick of New England weather I decided to venture on down to Florida and for a couple years did the whole seasonal server/bartender gig between there and Maine. This past May i decided to try something different and ended up here in Charleston. I love the city, though sad to say I may be moving again really soon (next few days) back to the good ole sunshine state.
2. Age, Occupation?
24, Transient
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
Well, after giving up on Hip Hop Abs, Buns of Steal,The Belly Dance-Dance Off, and Cardio Strip Tease, I decided it was time for a change. I was working at a restaurant down in Naples and one of the other servers Marcus got me interested. We would talk about fitness and such and he was always talking about how crazy his workout was that day. This guy was 52 years old, jacked with maybe 6%bf. When he explained the whole CrossFit thing to me I went home and checked it out online. I kept it in the back of mind and when I decided to move to Charleston one of the first things I checked out was to see if there was CrossFit gym near by. Sure enough CFI was just 2 miles down the road.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
I had been a Globo Gym regular for probably 3 years prior and unlike most people here, I actually liked it. I had a workout plan and I saw slow but consistent increases in my strength and size. And of course theres nothing better than the tearing pump from a good arms day!…..ok… I’ve left that behind. What I’ve learned through CrossFit is how much I wasn’t pushing myself. I would rarely do cardio and it was half ass when I did. CrossFit is just what I needed to MAKE my lazy ass get a cardio aspect into my workout. I’ve seen a huge increase in my endurance because of this and though its still farrrr from good, I’m definitely in the best shape of my life. Instead of finding excuses not to go or dragging myself to the gym, I look forward to it everyday (well almost everyday) now. I strive to better my form and PR every weight and time. I’ve always eaten decent and never smoked so no change there, now if I could just get this beer to stop showing up in my fridge…
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
Too many to name just one! Sooo, A CFT of 1000, A decent OHS, continuous Muscle Ups, continuous double unders, butterfly kips, sub 10% bodyfat, and a board worthy performance….just to name a few..
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
Its between doing my first two muscle ups and finishing my first long WOD… I think it was the Charleston 9.
7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?
I love working out in a group atmosphere. It makes me always try and give it my all because I never want to be the one to finish last (though I have quite often) or the one thats sandbagging the weight. It’s an excellent facility with an awesome bunch of athletes and great supportive coaches.
8. Favorite WOD?
Fight Gone Bad
9. Least favorite WOD?
Anything I can’t Rx and everything with over head squats. I avoid them like the plague
10. Favorite movement?
Deadlifts and anything else I can do fairly heavy
11. Least favorite movement?
OH Squats!…Double unders suck pretty bad too, but its just because I suck at them
12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?
I’ve only been out to a couple places for food, so I guess by default it’d be Rue de Jean

I’m still pissed I haven’t seen your muscle-up! And what’s this about you leaving?!? How will you see my muscle-up (when I finally get one) if you’re not here?!? Dislike.
Wait, I thought your favorite exercise is the bicep curl?
HAHA +1
I’m sensing a pattern…no more athlete profiles, because it seems to me that lately, once you are the athlete profile you move…I’m with Amy *dislike*
I remember back when Alex first got here and used to throw up…they grow up so fast…
Good luck Alex, you will be missed!!
Amy, I havent been able to do one since that day, so mark it up as a fluke I guess. Maybe Nigel will let you borrow his camera and you can tape your first MU and put it on facebook so I can see it! You’ll be repping em out in no time
Bryan, thanks for calling me out! I thought it said favorite CrossFit movement, my bad. haaha
lol! Thanks Denise! I’m sure theres much more throwing up to happen in my crossfit days!
