Athlete Profile:  Justin S

1. .  In general, what is your background?

I am a husband, father, veteran and law enforcement officer. During college and after, I played rugby and was in the Army so I have always tried to stay active.  In my free time I like to go to the beach, read, watch the Redskins and hang with my wife (Megan) and daughter (Averi).

2.  Age, Occupation?

 33, LEO

3.  How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

In November 2008, I was reading a law enforcement blog that discussed the best ways to get and shape and CrossFit was constantly mentioned so I decided to checkout crossfit.com.  I looked over it for a few days and decided I would quit my current bodybuilder type (i.e. chest/tri, back/bicep) workouts and begin the website WODS on Jan 1.  I hadn’t seen any progress in a years and I was the heaviest I had ever been so I decided to change and began the daily WODS at my former “globo” gym.  I got some strange looks when I was completing the WODs (virtual shoveling) but I hit it hard and saw results almost immediately.

In April, I was at Performance Chiropractic to see the excellent Dr. Evaline Delson (shameless plug) and I saw a business card for a new CrossFit affiliate in West Ashley.  I drove over there that day and met Coach Kevin.   I returned the following Monday for my first WOD and have been loving it ever since.

4.  How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

My level of fitness is better than it has ever been.  I weigh less than I did my senior year in high school.  Last November, I was 232 pounds and now I am 168.  I have knocked 2 or 3 minutes off WODS in a few months and feel great.  At 33, I am running faster than I was at 23.  I knocked 10 minutes off my bridge run time this year compared to when I did it in 2003 when I was on Army active duty and felt I was in really good shape.  I have also changed my diet and have gone to a “very liberal” Zone type diet and have still seen huge results.

I have always worked out but have never been as motivated until I got involved with CrossFit.  Although I sometimes dread the WOD that’s ahead I look forward to coming to CrossFit everyday and feel bad if I am unable to attend. When I run into people I have not seen for a while they ask me what I have been doing to get in such good shape and I tell them all about CrossFit.

 5.  Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

I would like to continue to increase strength and eventually obtain a 900 CFT score.

6.  Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

When I started I could do only a few pull-ups and used the bands for most of the WODS.  One of my favorite moments was when we did “Angie” a while back and I completed all the pull-ups RX.

 7.  What do you like most about Crossfit Integrity?

I will have to agree with Alana and say the people, both members and coaches.  There have been many days where I check the website and just dread showing up.  Once I get there and start the WOD this all changes.  I become motivated by the other members and coaches to try and PR every workout.

 8.  Favorite WOD?

I like Helen because I do better on the running WODs and it is short.

9.  Least favorite WOD?

My least favorite WODs are pretty much tied.  The first is DT” because I was hurting for days and next is “Karen” because I hate wallballs.

10. Favorite movement?

Power Clean

 11. Least favorite movement?

Double Unders

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

I am a cheap date and love calzones at the Mellow Mushroom.
