Athlete Profile – Tessa Wyborny

1.  In general, what is your background?

I was born in California originally and went to undergrad at Arizona State where I played water polo all four years. I lived in Ohio for 2 years before moving to Nebraska to go to medical school where I graduated this past May and I moved to Charleston in June to do my residency in pediatrics. I have been a bit of a wanderer for the last 10 years.

2.  Age, Occupation?

I am 28 years old and I work as a pediatric resident physician. For those that don’t know what that means, it means I have my M.D. and am working towards getting my license in pediatrics. I’m currently still getting used to being called doctor.

3.  How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

I started CrossFit about three and a half years ago, by some encouragement from one of my closest friends from college who played water polo with me. I actually did my first CrossFit workout at CrossFit LA in Southern California while visiting her and I loved the challenge. She helped me find CrossFit Omaha in Nebraska which was where I started. Honestly, I really wasn’t great at anything in particular first except for power cleans and I used to get so frustrated when I wasn’t able to keep up with all the other members.

4.  How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

I wouldn’t say CrossFit has really changed my lifestyle, I have pretty much worked out at this type of intensity for most of my life just in different disciplines. CrossFit provides me a similar sense of community that I felt playing water polo in college and it gives me some structure in regards to my fitness. I am definitely stronger than I was back then and in some ways I wish I could have found CrossFit sooner in my athletic career because it could have provided a lot of motivation in the weight room back then.

5.  Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

There are a lot of things that I want to accomplish in CrossFit which is what makes me come to the gym everyday. I would like to get my snatch over 130# and that is just one goal of many.

6.  Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

There are so many moments that have been inspiring. I can remember the second WOD from the open in 2011, I did as a visitor to a box in Phoenix, AZ. I met so many new people and it was great experience to be a part of the community.

7.  What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

The community at Integrity is great, everybody has been so welcoming especially to a fairly new member like me.

8.  Favorite WOD?

Helen or DT

9.  Least favorite WOD?

Anything with prowler push, it makes me feel so awful after!

10. Favorite movement?

I love any power movement like power clean or power snatch and pull ups. I also like to do muscle ups too (especially after a 2 year struggle to be able to do them)

11. Least favorite movement?

Still the prowler push

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

I haven’t been here too long, but Coast has been one of my favorites. Great mojitos!
