Athlete Profile: Whitney Sheppard

1. In general, what is your background?
I grew up in Spartanburg, SC and moved here to Charleston about 2 years ago for school. I’m a student at MUSC trying to finish up my Masters in Speech-Language Pathology. I have never been very athletic at all. I did competetive cheerleading and tumbling throughout highschool, but that’s about the extent of my athleticism. I love the beach, nights out with friends, and spending time with my ridiculously cute puppy, Sawyer.
2. Age, Occupation?
23, and STILL a student…
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
I found out about CrossFit from some friends in Spartanburg. They had mentioned coming down to Charleston for LowCountry’s grand opening back in April and I decided to tag along. I was so intimidated and scared to death to try that first WOD (Fight Gone Bad) but somehow was already addicted. I started coming regularly in June of this year.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
Before CrossFit I could not tell you the last time I worked out regularly. Getting to the gym was torture for me. I was completely unmotivated to workout. With CrossFit, I’ve found something I look forward to everyday. I am always bummed when I can’t make it into the gym. Anyone who knows me well would tell you how strange it is to see me doing CrossFit. I love that I can keep track of my times and weights and see my improvement each week. My level of fitness has improved tremendously, but I’m still working on those diet changes…
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
I want to be able to Rx a WOD that requires 95lbs. Not there yet, but working on it.
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
My favorite CrossFit moment was defnitely Rxing my first pull-up WOD. It was such a great feeling! I also loved being able to RX Fran for the first time, even though it took me forever to complete. It was the first weight WOD I was able to Rx.
7. What do you like most about Crossfit Integrity?
I have to agree with everyone so far and say the people. In CrossFit we all work for individual times and scores, but it doesn’t feel that way. We all motivate and push one another, and I honestly feel like I am part of a team. The WODs can be so intimidating, but as soon as I start to doubt whether or not I can finish (or even start) someone is there with encouraging words. There’s no way that I would see the improvement that I have without the motivation from everyone there.
8. Favorite WOD?
Fight Gone Bad. I hate it while I’m doing it but LOVE the feeling when I’m able to finish.
9. Least favorite WOD?
Murph. The running kills me! And Karen is pretty awful too.
10. Favorite movement?
Thrusters
11. Least favorite movement?
Double Unders
12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?
The Kickin’ Chicken on James Island. It’s better than the others
