1. In general, what is your background?
I grew up in the small town of Union, South Carolina which is only about a three hour drive from Charleston. I was an only child so my parents stuck me into every sport possible so I could actually have other kids to play with hah. I grew up with my parents owning their own business which definitely taught me that hard work can get you anywhere and laid a good foundation of work ethic. My childhood basically consisted of tournaments, games, and anything to do outdoors, such as riding dirt bikes and climbing everything possible…which I still do now haha. I have always had a passion for sport and movement ever since I was little and don’t think I could ever go an extended period of time without some type of intense exercise. In high school I played every sport I was allowed, except volleyball. But tennis quickly became my main sport and I ended up representing my state in the North Vs. South All-star Tournament my senior year of high school. I torn my labrum my sophomore year, which is why I opted out of playing in college due to having to have surgery. This decision eventually led me to attend the College of Charleston, where I am currently a sophomore and play lacrosse!
2. Age, Occupation?
19, Student at CofC. But I did just land my first job that hasn’t started quite yet at the new George Street Fitness Center
3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?
I had first seen CrossFit on TV when the CrossFit Games 2012 were airing and was completely blown away. I was 17 at the time and still in high school so absolutely no one I knew did CrossFit or had basically even heard of it. I started looking it up a good bit on YouTube and knew I wanted to be able to do stuff like that! So my senior year of soccer was coming to an end and I decided to contact the owner of CrossFit Spartanburg which was about a 40 minute drive from my house and told him I was interested. He told me to be there Monday at 5am and we could get started! So for the last two months of my last year in high school I would wake up a 3:45am, drive to CrossFit, go to school, then practice. None of my coaches in school had every pushed me to that limit where you know there was nothing else you could have done. But CrossFit did that for me.. it challenged me, and that’s why I fell in love with it.
4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
Oh goodness where do I start. I have always been the girl that was the size of a pole growing up. All I ever heard when I was younger was ” you’re so tiny.” My hatred for that word started then. I was a midfielder in soccer and enjoyed running but just had the genes to be tiny and eat anything I wanted and never gain a pound. I started CrossFit with the hopes to GAIN weight as I started out my first day at 105lbs. It actually didn’t take long for me to start putting on weight and getting a lot stronger. I remember dreaming about the day I could do a strict chin-up and being able to overhead squat over 55lbs. Now I am over 25lbs heavier and lifting and doing things I never could have imagined when I first started. Although my running is a little worse than it was in high school, I wouldn’t wanna be back at the “can run miles & miles but cant pick up a stick” body type.
5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?
The biggest goal I have in mind is to be able to squat over 200lbs. These chicken legs will get there one day, even though it may take a while.. it will happen and be one of the best days ever!
6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
The Open. That whole week would have to be my favorite “moment.” The way the gym comes together as a whole and the atmosphere of the gym that week is something you gotta love.
7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?
As I believe everyone would say; the community. I had to go home for the summer last year and I missed the gym more than I missed my friends from school.. Is that bad? hah but I love our athletes and how competitive and supportive everyone is especially being one of the youngest in the gym. Its awesome to have someone older to look at you as not only a good athlete but also a friend.
8. Favorite WOD?
My favorite would have to be Hotshots 19. Not only because of what it stands for and represents, but any workout that’s longer, I love. I despise the short ones that take less than 15 minutes for some odd reason.
9. Least favorite WOD?
Would have to be Jackie.. Rowing then thrusters?? I’ll pass!!
10. Favorite movement?
Power cleans are my fav! Oly class is definitely letting snatch become a favorite also, due to the fact that I love how complex the movement is and how perfect form has to be to succeed.
11. Least favorite movement?
Thrusters and rowing….gross
12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?
The life of a college student living on King Street left me with only one choice.. KICKIN CHICKEN!!
