Athlete Profile Farran McClanahan

1. In general, what is your background?

I was born in York, Pa but my family is originally from Lake Placid, NY.  We moved around a lot when I was little(Michigan, Wisconsin, Maine, PA), but being from the Adirondacks you learn to have a love for the outdoors at a young age.  I have always participated in an organized sport but hiking is my favorite.  An ultimate goal of mine is to eventually climb all 46 high peaks in the Adirondacks, so far I have climbed 15.  I had never lived at the beach before so after graduating college I moved to Charleston(5 years ago).  I miss the mountains but manage to get back at least twice a year.  I met my husband Chad down here and we got married back in May.

2. Age, Occupation?

28, Registered Nurse Interventional Radiology

3. How did you get to know about CrossFit and why did you start?

I love to run!  I really enjoy the mental aspects of running!  I hate to weight lift! When Brooke Bentley came to work with me she kept talking about this program CrossFit.  I pretty much ignored it at the beginning but she insisted that I come.  After my first workout I fell in love with the entire concept of CrossFit.  And now weight lifting is one of my favorite work outs!

4. How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

I really don’t even know where to start!  I have never felt so strong!  I have a really weak back that I have thrown out a number of times, but since I have started CrossFit my back has never felt better(as long as I have good form!).  I have a lot more confidence when handling a patient at work(because we all know how small South Carolina patients are!) knowing that I am not going to hurt my back.  It is also a constant reminder of what I need to put into my body.  I have yet to go strictly Paleo but I now think more Paleo then before when it comes to choosing what to cook.

5. Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit?

I just finally got a kipping pull-up and double unders!!  I am very happy about that!   I am now trying to get a free-standing handstand and would eventually like to make it up on the board.

6. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Every time I successfully finish a WOD!  It is the best feeling knowing that you gave it your all!

7. What do you like most about CrossFit Integrity?

It is such an upbeat atmosphere!  CrossFit(coaches, athletes) makes you want to give it your all.  There really has never been a day that I have left thinking to myself that I could have worked out harder, and because of that the results speak for themselves!

8. Favorite WOD?

I love the hero workouts!

9. Least favorite workout?

Any workout with a lot of front squats…

10. Favorite movement?

Box jumps and I am really starting to like double unders now that I can do them!

11. Least favorite movement?

I really don’t like Front Squats.

12. Favorite place to eat in Charleston?

There are so many!  Most of the time I really enjoying cooking!  But if I had to pick one it would be Coast!
